Vice President, General Counsel, Secretary and Ethics & Compliance Officer
For more than 16 years, Tania King, Advantage Sales and Marketing’s (ASM) general counsel, has been a legal leader at the frontline of complex restructurings, acquisitions and financings of growing multi-national companies. Ms. King began advising ASM in 2001, when the company was preparing for a complex restructuring designed to consolidate 24 separate operating companies. In addition to the consolidation, the role involved the simultaneous negotiation of an investment in the newly consolidated entity by a large private equity sponsor. Subsequently, Ms. King was selected to consolidate the legal function and took action to build ASM’s in-house legal department. With a strong legal team in place, Ms. King managed the closing of a second private equity transaction in 2006 and simultaneously oversaw a significant ramp up of strategic mergers and acquisition transactions. In 2010, Ms. King was instrumental in the sale of the company to Apax Partners, a leading global private equity firm, managing all internal legal oversight and due diligence. Today, ASM, with annual revenue of more than $1.4 billion, is the leading sales and marketing agency representing global clients and national retailers across all key consumer packaged goods categories.
Ms. King has led the legal management and negotiation of ASM’s mergers and acquisitions, strategic joint ventures, investment transactions, corporate governance, and strategic agreements, as well as providing business insights, for more than a decade. During her tenure, she instituted an acclaimed ethics program at the company to bring a consistent training regime and culture of compliance to ASM’s 30,000+ associates in more than 60 offices in North America. In 2012, she extended her role to become interim senior vice president of human resources. Also in 2012, in recognition for her exceptional legal skill and achievement, Ms. King was awarded General Counsel of the Year of a Private Company by the Orange County Business Journal.
Previously, Ms. King was vice president, general counsel and secretary for Quickstart Technologies, Inc., a Microsoft Technical Education Center service firm that provided technical education, consulting, software development, information technology staffing, and publication of Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine. At the company, Ms. King directed all corporate legal affairs and was selected as a member of the Board of Directors to provide counsel on key initiatives and business strategy.
Ms. King has served as an adjunct professor at the University of California, Irvine. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in Law & Society. She received her Juris Doctor from Santa Clara University School of Law and was granted a Comparative Law Certificate from Oxford University.
Ms. King is a member of the American Bar Association, California State Bar Association, Orange County Bar Association, and American Corporate Counsel. In addition, she sits on the board of VOSS Water and participates in the Chapman University law mentor program.
